Rumney Marsh Picture

Canoeing in the Rumney Marsh offers an exciting opportunity to explore this important coastal resource. To ensure an enjoyable outing canoeists should be aware of the following and take the appropriate safety precautions:

Currents related to the tides can be very strong. Currents are caused by tidal changes and water being restricted (a narrow channel or under a bridge). Currents can sweep and trap a small craft into pilings, low clearance bridges, and other craft.

Wind at open sections of Rumney Marsh can make canoeing a less than enjoyable experience. Light breezes (0-10 mph) can make steering difficult - Moderate breezes (10-20 mph) create large waves and can make maneuvering extremely difficult. Strong winds (20 + mph) can capsize a canoe.

Boat traffic. Some craft might not be able to see you easily, while larger craft are often restricted to channels and cannot steer out of the way. Always be alert for traffic, fast moving jet skies, etc. Avoid busy areas if possible and cross these sections in groups. It's helpful to check with the area harbormaster before venturing out.

Weather changes constantly. Severe weather can cause severe conditions (high wind, thunderstorms). Also extremes in temperatures can cause hypothermia or heat exhaustion. The following are precautions that any small craft operator should consider:

  • Be a good swimmer and always wear an approved life preserver

  • Don't paddle alone.

  • Approach waves at a right angle.

  • Before you go out know the weather conditions and tides.

  • Boat defensively. Avoid accidents before the occur.

  • Cross busy channels quickly, in groups in areas of good visibility.

  • If you capsize, stay calm, account for the rest of the party, hold on to the craft and seek assistance from

  • other boaters.
