"Two great marshes, which are made two by a pleasant River (Saugus River) which runnes between them...at the mouth of this river runnes up a great creek (Pines River)"

William Wood, Historian, 1629

Welcome to the Rumney Marshes. Much has changed since William Wood first viewed this area over 360 years ago, but the Marshes can still impress visitors. Its quiet beauty offers an escape to nature in an otherwise urban setting.

An excellent way to experience the Rumney Marsh is by canoe. This site offers canoeist (and kayakers) an introduction to the area, highlighting its natural and cultural features, canoe access points, safety concerns and how to get involved in the preservation and protection of this important natural area.

Coastal wetlands such as Rumney Marshes have been abused over the years by filling, pollution, and indifference. These wetlands can only really be protected when they become valued through educational and recreational activities. One of the goals of this guide is to create a greater appreciation of the Rumney Marshes.
